    6. FatCow ($4.08/month)

In the recent era, creating a website is no more tedious task and it’s even more difficult to host it. With all these amazing web hosting services claiming to be the best, it can easily confuse anyone.

Here’s where FatCow can be of great help to you.

FatCow has been in the market since 1998, and since then it has developed a prime name for itself. It is owned and managed by EIG (Endurance International Group), the company that also owns popular hosting brands like Ipage etc.

For at least once, FatCow has seen a prime time with its promising services. Let’s see through this review if it is still the same or you can find better options on the market.

Most websites these days are presenting misleading prices to draw you in, committing you to a three-year payment or a long- term deal. Or another common trick is by initially offering a low price subscription but then increasing it sharply because now there’s a poor possibility of you leaving.

But, you can certainly be assured that FatCow uses none of these tactics to trap their customers. There are no tricks, gimmicks involved and this is the real deal. Fat Cow not only offers a cheap hosting plan but also guarantees you a 30- day money back offer.

FatCow offers approximately 4000 professionally designed web icons that would help you improve the overall design of your website. The best part is that they are absolutely free. All that fat cow wants is recognition for its web icons and all you need to do is to add credits for FatCow in your webpage.

FatCow is really good at satisfying their customers with their 24/7 support. The support staff contacts you in a span of a few minutes and are glad to help you with their services. Apart from the Live Chat option, you can also opt for FatCow‘s extensive user knowledge base.

The knowledge base aids the users in finding answers to the questions about their account, security, policies, emails, files, partnership programs, domains and much more. You can also directly search a keyword, rather than filtering through the whole base.

Most Cheap Hosting services don’t offer backup and you have to opt for a third party backup plan. But, this is not the case with FatCow. To secure your data and information FatCow offers a daily backup service, which is undoubtedly a huge benefit.

    Pros

    • No scamming issues with the prices of web hosting.
    • Cheap web hosting plans with a 30- day money-back assurance.
    • Free access to 4000 professionally designed web icons.
    • 24/7 Live Chat support with excellent customer service.
    • The extensive knowledge base that has answers to most of your questions about accounts, emails, domains etc.
    • Free Website Transfers and Domain names for new account sign-ups.
    • Equipped with a daily backup service that secures information.

    Cons

    • The security features are not free. To make your webpage secure, free of malware and blacklisting, you need to pay for security features.
    • Annoying, aggressive upselling that starts immediately after you enter your credit card details. Cancelling a trial can also cause charges on your credit card.
    • The slow loading speed of the page can be very irritating.
    • Fails to deliver good uptime with consistency.

    Conclusion

FatCow is a nice web hoster with excellent pricing and support. The web icons and the daily backup can is a huge plus but the below-average uptime is a huge drawback.

Overall, if you are looking for a cheap web hosting facility then this is a great option in spite of the fact that you would certainly not find the quality like a top-notch expensive web hoster.

  • Your Page As A Mirror, Or The Reason People Buy Blocks Of Cheese Product

It’s time to sell a block of cheese!

    Not just any cheese. Velveeta.

(Which is leftover swiss cheese bits and whey. Mmm.)

So, what do you do? How do you interest people?

Here’s how they did it in this 1960’s Velveeta ad:

    Copy for Velveeta ad

The ad re-creates a moment many mothers are sure to have felt: a day spent rushing around, trying to get everything ticked off her list, taking care of her children and then being confronted with the task of trying to make something fast, easy and delicious for her family. Who has the time or energy to make a roux for macaroni and cheese?

But look! Here’s a simple solution that gets me. It appreciates me.

Plus, it speeds up cooking time and is oh so versatile!

    Sounds wonderful.

And what’s this? It’s “full of health,” making it “extra good for youngsters and young mothers.”

You know we buy based on emotion and justify with logic.
    But do you know why?

In the SAGE Handbook of Advertising, Dr. Gerard Tellis writes:

“Emotions are direct reactions to the stimulating atmosphere that is being created by the artistic execution known as an ad.”

So whether it’s through sadness, joy, excitement, frustration—writing copy that teases out emotions helps prime readers for your solution.

Studies show that one’s emotional response to ads impacts intent to buy by a factor of 3-to-1 for television ads and 2-to-1 for print ads.

And certain emotions produce even stronger results. Stories with undertones of anger, anxiety and awe were the most widely shared pieces on the New York Times website, as indicated in a study by two University of Pennsylvania professors.

    Emotion sells.

Take the following ASPCA ad. Rather than speaking to positive emotions and benefits that donating to their organization can bring – healthy dogs playing fetch – they take the sadness angle. They arouse strong feelings of guilt and anxiety for these sad-looking animals. Cue Sarah McLachlan, in case you weren’t already moved enough…

    ASPCA ad copy

BTW, here’s how to sponsor a little one

As much as you may find yourself rushing to change the channel (for shame!) after the third time an ASPCA commercial interrupts your viewing of The Voice, the marketing itself proves out. It works. Poking at raw emotions works to the tune of $142M per year for the ASPCA (as reported here for fiscal year 2013).

We see fundraisers for non-profits use this tactic all the time.

An AMA Journal of Marketing Research study tested 3 different emotion-inspiring photos in a fundraising campaign: sad, happy, neutral. They found that the sad photos produced a 25% higher response rate than happy or neutral photos.

Emotional copywriting is widely used in the for-profit sector, too. Has been for decades.

Consider Budweiser’s 2015 SuperBowl ad. This little 60-second spot played up the “Awww!” factor with its #BestBuds lost puppy ad. Any surprise it was named the #1 commercial of 2015 by USA Today (and has over 29M YouTube views)?

  • How to Turn Quora into a Traffic-Driving Machine for Your Blog

    Frustrating, isn’t it?

You work tirelessly on your content – but no one reads it.

It’s like giving a presentation to an empty room. No matter how much insight you have to share, nobody’s there to even notice.

You feel certain that if you could only get some more traffic to your blog, the content love would flow.

But even when you promote the heck out of your latest post, the following week you have to start the process all over again.

    It’s exhausting.

But what if there was a strategy that could drive traffic not just to your latest post, but future ones too?

And what if that same strategy was as effective as guest blogging for getting new visitors, but was quicker, easier and didn’t require you to pitch your ideas to anyone?

What if by using that strategy you’d be rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names on the web?

Wouldn’t you want to know what that strategy is?

Quora – The Surprising Traffic Driver for Savvy Bloggers

    Have you heard of Quora?

It’s the Q&A platform where anyone can post a question and get answers from experts in the community.

Here’s what it looks like in action:

    Quora questions

Even though Quora was launched way back in 2009, you might not have encountered it until recently.

But make no mistake, these days Quora is a big deal.

Everyone from Ashton Kutcher to professors at MIT and even Barack Obama have taken their turn answering questions.

However, if you’ve spent any time on the platform, you might wonder how it could help you as a blogger.

You may even see Quora as a potential threat – yet another distraction dragging you away from the serious work of running your blog.

If so, you might be surprised to learn that Quora can be a major source of traffic for bloggers.

    Don’t believe me?

Right now, Quora is the number-one traffic driver for my blog.

Along the way, my answers on the platform have hit over 1,000,000 views, and I’ve been featured three times in the Quora Daily Digest that goes out to up to 2,000,000 people.

And all of this has happened in just six months.

The Benefits of Quora for Smart People with Answers

When you think about it, Quora is the perfect platform for bloggers to demonstrate their knowledge and expertise.

After all, most of us blog to help our readers with the problems they wrestle with, and a Q&A format is the purest expression of helping people with their problems.

As a blogger, not only will you find Quora a natural community in which to participate, but you’ll get several benefits from doing so.

Benefit #1: Quora Is a Source of Long-Term Traffic

I’ve already mentioned the traffic potential of Quora, but an additional benefit is that answers posted on the platform can continue to drive traffic months after being created.

For example, I still receive significant traffic from one post I wrote back on August 23rd, 2015:

    quora long term traffic

Nearly three months later, people are still finding my answer to this question about passive income, and when someone “upvotes” it (the Quora community’s way of giving support for an answer), my answer appears in their feed and is visible to all of their followers.

The result? More traffic comes back to my blog as well as a ton of new opt-ins for my email list.

Quora’s Stats page shows how my answer has received 83K views from the community.

    quora stats

In practice, the traffic generation effect can last much longer than just two or three months.

Tony Stubblebine, the founder of Coach.me, reports that a Quora post he wrote about meditation last year continues to bring him traffic to this day.

Remember, each answer you write can become an asset that brings you traffic for years to come.

Benefit #2: Quora Lets You Establish Yourself as an Authority

How would you like to be known as the most viewed writer in your topic area?

That’s what I was able to do in Self-Improvement, a seriously competitive topic.

Now my name stands next to James Altucher in the Quora rankings:

    quora rankings

You might think you need to post regularly to maintain your ranking, and while that’s somewhat true, rankings last longer than you might think. My colleague Kevin Lee (who co-authored my book on Quora) has been ranked as the top writer for the Product Manager category for the past 2 years – even though he only posts occasionally on that topic.

Quora also gives topic badges to top writers. These appear next to your name for everyone to see.

    quora topic badges

When you appear in the most viewed writers list and start to earn badges, you’ll find that people begin to ask you questions (called Ask to Answer – A2A) on the topic under which you are featured. And that’s the true sign of authority, right? When people approach you for your expertise completely unprompted.

Benefit #3: Quora Can Get You Noticed by Major Publications

Continue writing on Quora and you also have a good chance of being featured on a big site like Forbes.

That’s because major publications are now sourcing content directly from Quora and publishing selected answers verbatim on their websites.

Here are some examples from Google:

quora get noticed by major publications

This has happened to almost all of Quora’s top writers. One of the most successful is Nicolas Cole, who has been featured in TIME, The Huffington Post, Business Insider, Forbes and many others.

How to Start the Engine on Your Quora Traffic Machine

At this point, you must be asking how can you tap into all this Quora goodness.

Fortunately, there’s a simple three-step process you can follow to dominate Quora in your topic and start driving traffic to your blog.

    Step #1: Create a Traffic-Optimized Profile

New writers on Quora often don’t take the time to fill out their profile in its entirety. But that’s a big mistake because you’ll fail to stand out from the thousands of other profiles on Quora.

The perfect Quora profile starts with the perfect profile bio.

Give Yourself a Killer Headline with the Profile Bio

Your profile bio is the “headline” that appears immediately beneath your name in your Quora profile.

When completing this, you need to decide what topic you want to be known for and consider the type of questions you’ll be answering.

Your bio should signal to your audience that you’re qualified to answer those questions.

Choose your words wisely because space is limited – you only have 80 characters to express yourself.

One popular format is to give a list of descriptive roles separated by a “pipe” character.

Here’s Leonard Kim’s profile bio, which uses this format:

    quora profile bio

Your profile bio is important because it appears next to your name in any context where your profile appears, e.g., above any answers that you create.

Note that any links you put in your bio will not be rendered as clickable links, so you might want to reserve those for your profile summary.

Add Detail Using the Profile Summary

Under your profile bio is your profile summary, where you can provide more information about yourself.

The summary field is only shown when people click to view your profile in full, but on the plus side it is far less restricted in length and format than your profile bio.

Rich formatting like bold, italic and underline is supported, together with lists and blockquotes. Web addresses will also be correctly rendered as clickable links, so this is the perfect place to link to your blog.

Here are some of the ways you can use your profile summary field, inspired by top Quora writers:

    • Tell the story of your life and professional experience.
    • Link to your blogs and social media profiles.
    • Mention publications you’ve written for, to build social proof.
    • Share any quirky or interesting facts – this is your chance to be different.

Above all, don’t bore the reader. Try to be interesting and inspiring – humor works well too.

    Here’s a preview of Brandon Lee’s profile:

quora profile bio - brandon lee

Notice that Brandon cleverly constructs his summary from his past answers on the site.

Doing this not only helps give you credibility (once you’ve created a few successful answers) but also provides an opportunity to get more upvotes and views on your top answers.

Finally, you can also tag other writers in your summary, but more on that later.

Claim Your Core Topics and Add Custom Bios

Quora allows you to add specific topics to your profile and provide bios for each one. (These bios override your main bio when answering questions on these topics.)

To add a topic, simply click on this panel in the sidebar of your profile:

    add a quora topic

Then search for relevant topics to add to your profile. In this case, we’re adding Blogging as a topic that we know about:

    quora relevant topics

Once you’ve selected a topic, you can edit the bio that’s used when you answer questions on that topic:

    quora custom topic bio

Creating a custom bio for each of your main topics allows you to highlight the most relevant aspects of your experience for each topic.

Once you’ve added some topics that you know about, they’ll appear in your public profile.

    Here’s a preview of Nicolas Cole’s list:

    quora topics in public profile

So those are the building blocks of a perfect Quora profile.

Remember, your Quora profile is key to gaining credibility with your audience and must not be overlooked, even if you’re keen to start answering questions.

If your profile fails to persuade people you’re qualified to answer the questions that interest them, you’ll struggle to get views and upvotes.

Step #2: Go Hunting for “Big Game” Questions

This is the step that 95% of Quora writers miss and it’s the difference between getting 50 versus 1,000 views on your answers.

    Are you ready?

Before you write a single answer, you need to find the answers that are attracting the most views and upvotes within your topic of interest.

So start by looking for a relevant topic. You can use this list of the most followed topics on Quora for 2015 to find the ones getting the most traffic and views from the community.

As as example, we’ll use the Self-Improvement topic.

    finding popular quora answers

As you can see, this topic is very popular, with over 400K followers. So you know that it will attract more traffic and will lead to more views than a less popular topic like, say, Taxidermy.

Now, look for the Topic FAQ – this will show the top questions being asked at the moment.

You’ll notice in this example that 1,613 people have answered the question, “What can I learn/know right now in 10 minutes that will be useful for the rest of my life?”

So if you were in the personal development space, this would be a great topic for you to target.

Answer this question in detail, and you have a good chance of getting 1,000 views on your first attempt. (We’ll look at specific tips for writing popular answers shortly.)

But where do those views come from?

Click through to the question’s answer page and you’ll find out:

    quora mailing list

Notice the number of people following this question – over 35,000!

And many of these folks will be notified as soon as your answer is posted.

It’s like having a huge mailing list at your fingertips.

    How awesome is that?

Since you’re just researching questions at this stage, not answering them, click the “three dots” icon and select “Answer Later.”

This will help you build a database of questions you want to answer. When it’s time to dive into the writing process you can take a clear run at it, rather than go looking for new questions to answer each time.

As you browse Quora, whenever you find a popular question you could answer, be sure to add it to your “Answer Later” list.

Step #3: Carefully Craft Your Answers

No single formula exists for writing the perfect Quora answer, but certain tactics will considerably increase your chances of success.

And you’ll improve with practice. Just like best-selling authors take time to hone their skill, the same applies to writing answers on Quora.

Luck plays its part too. One answer may bomb while another goes viral, without any obvious explanation.

But if you use the following tactics, you’ll experience success much sooner.

    Tactic #1: Tell Stories

Stories are so powerful that Seth Godin devoted an entire book to explaining why you should use them – it’s called, “All Marketers Are Liars.”

It’s been scientifically proven that when we hear a story our brain activates the same areas it would if we were experiencing the events of the story ourselves.

For instance, if I told you a story about a delicious, rich, velvety piece of chocolate cake that I devoured last night, your sensory cortex lights up – you partially live that experience!

This is why personal stories of tragedy, struggle and personal perseverance do exceptionally well on Quora.

Don’t believe me? Check out all these answers with thousands of views about Dashrath Manjhi – the man who, following the death of his wife, spent 22 years carving a path through a mountain using only a hammer and a chisel.

Even if your topic doesn’t lend itself to big emotion, you can usually package up at least some of your points in a story.

    Tactic #2: Get Visual

According to a Buzzsumo study of two million articles, those that showed an image once every 75–100 words got double the amount of shares of articles with fewer images.

You only need to look at the success of apps like Instagram to realize just how visually driven we humans are.

On Quora, using images is the best way I’ve found to quickly stand out from all the other answers.

The majority of writers do not bother looking for images. Their answers end up looking like a sea of bland text and are easily skipped over by readers.

    Here’s a great example:

    Quora - Use Visual Content
Tactic #3: Don’t Sell the Farm

When answering questions, make sure you provide enough value to get upvotes and views but not so much that you give away all the details.

This tactic is the key to driving traffic to your blog.

It’s also given me a massive uptick in my email opt-ins.

As an example, I used this tactic when I answered the question about how to earn $500 per month in passive income through an online enterprise, the one that garnered 85,000 views.

In my answer, I explain a four-step process for building a niche business by starting with e-books and casually hint that I earn money writing books.

This piques the reader’s interest. Then, in Step 2 of my process I link to a post on my own website giving further details.

    Quora link to website

The same day this post went viral – September 11th, 2015 – I received 78 new email subscribers.

Here’s my Google Analytics data below:

    Google analytics viral quora post
    Tactic #4: Go Deep

When you approach a question, you should set out to create the best answer for that question.

There is no point creating a quick 200-300–word answer on a top question because you will just get lost among all the other answers.

You need to spend time writing a long, thoughtful answer. One that hopefully incorporates a story from your life.

If you want your answer to withstand the test of time, make sure it is memorable and can hold its own as other writers continue adding answers.

Oliver Emberton, hailed by some as the Michael Jordan of Quora, has made a career of this. Answering only 127 questions but garnering 9.8M views, he was named a top Quora writer in both 2013 and 2014 and has used Quora as a springboard to launch his blog.

You can read more of his story here.

5 Domination Tips from Quora’s Most Successful Writers

I interviewed a dozen top Quora writers for my book Quora Domination*. Here are a few of their best tips for success.

    * For a chance to receive a free copy of the book, leave a comment at the end of the post. The best comment submitted between now and Thanksgiving (26 November) wins!

Tip #1: Post Late at Night or Early in the Morning

If you are living in North America, consider posting early in the day or late at night.

Since a large portion of Quora’s user base is from the Indian subcontinent (38.5% according to Alexa), you can get a lot of views when they are just waking up or going to bed. (When it’s 8:00 a.m. in New York City, it’s 6:30 p.m. in Mumbai; 10:00 p.m. in NYC is 8:30 a.m. in Mumbai.)

For me, early morning answers work much better than afternoon ones, for instance.

    Tip #2: Target Trending Topics

Another way top writers have grown their view counts in a short amount of time is to target topics appearing in Quora’s trending topics section.

    Quora target trending topics

Similar to Twitter’s Trends, these are hot topics that are getting a lot of views right now.

Robert Frost absolutely crushed it recently when the movie “The Martian” came out and was turned into a trending topic.

Here’s one post that took off:

    Trending Topics

Tip #3: Go Against the Herd

One tactic many top writers recommend is going against the herd when answering a question.

Most answers tend to be repetitive, causing readers to think, “Been there, done that.” So when someone comes along and says something truly different, everyone listens.

    Be that someone.

If you can, make your first few lines controversial. When readers who are following the question get notified, they will receive a preview of your answer, and if the intro is intriguing, they are more likely to click through to find out more.

    Tip #4: Tag Your Competition

When writing an answer, tag other writers who have answered the question before you.

    This accomplishes two things:

    1. It acknowledges that you respect their answers and want to give them credit for what they have already said.
    2. It causes Quora to notify them and let them know you have mentioned them in an answer.

Despite being a heavily trafficked website, the group of people actually writing answers on Quora is relatively small.

And by getting on people’s radars, you’re more likely to attain top writer status as you’ll have a better chance of being spotted by the group who pick the top Quora writers every year.

Tip #5: Become a Writing Machine

Almost every top writer I spoke to has made a regular commitment to writing on Quora.

Many recommend that you write every day.

    That’s right. Every single day.

Not only will your writing improve significantly but each answer acts as a form of promotion for your previous ones – reader will view one answer, and if they like it, they’ll check out others you’ve written.

The effect is a snowball of views.

And that’s the real secret to dominating on Quora.

Want More Traffic? Quora Has the Answer

Let’s face it, every blogger is hungry for more traffic.

But few of them are looking for it on Quora.

And that’s a huge reservoir of opportunity just waiting to be tapped.

The good news? You’re perfectly positioned to take advantage.

The skills you’ve learned as a blogger are the same skills you need to make your answers stand out on the platform.

So create an account, craft your profile and start hunting for those “big game” questions on which you’ll build your Quora reputation.

The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll dominate.

And once you do, your traffic will soar.

  • 9 Surefire Strategies for Standing Out in a Sea of Sameness

It feels just like struggling to solve a 24,000-piece jigsaw puzzle, doesn’t it?

Connecting everything you’ve heard about building a popular blog.

Advice about headlines, design, writing, promotion, outreach – the list never ends.

And all the while you feel like nobody truly cares about your blog.

The big names in your niche get hundreds of comments and shares just for hitting “Publish” (lucky ducks), but your blog struggles to make the slightest impact.

    Highly annoying, isn’t it?

The problem is that people don’t remember you, and they don’t talk about you.

And trying to figure out why is giving you a migraine.

    The good news?

One final puzzle piece will finally get people talking and drag your name up from obscurity.

Are you ready to discover what it is?

The Missing Puzzle Piece That’ll Make You Massively More Memorable

Growing your traffic, building an email list, and writing value-packed posts are great and all, but they don’t guarantee that you will stand out.

In real life, you may be as unique as a snowflake. Your personality may bubble over with friends.

But none of that matters in the online world unless you make a conscious choice to stand out.

You must decide to be different, larger than life, and someone worth talking about. Otherwise, you’ll remain just another Average Joe. Another ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average “Emmet” who never steps outside the box.

What you need is a standout maneuver.

It’s a bold, calculated move to attract attention, imprint yourself in the minds of your readers, and persuade them to spread the word about you.

(It’s also the missing piece of the jigsaw.)

Use the following nine standout maneuvers to stop being an ordinary, forgettable blogger and start being remarkable.

    1) Craft Your Public Image

Throughout history, important figures have carefully crafted their public images to cultivate a unique, memorable impression.

Take a look at this portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte:

    Napoleon Bonaparte

The royal scepter, the opulent garb, the graceful placement of the hands and foot, the majestic expression… all are designed to create the perception of power and nobility.

But these days you don’t need to commission an oil painting to control the way you’re perceived.

Check out how some seriously memorable bloggers have deliberately crafted their public images to great effect.

Derek Halpern dressed up to the nines, got a $310 haircut, donned a stately expression, and featured his imposing portrait front and center on the Social Triggers homepage.

    Derek Halpern

Tara Gentile makes a conscious choice to be the biggest possible version of herself. She enlisted the help of a friend and jewelry designer, Megan Auman, who helped her cultivate the outfits she wears as her “quietly powerful” public persona.

    Tara Gentile

Darren Rowse of Problogger wears the same dark-rimmed glasses in all his photos. Staring down the camera lens and using a close crop for the final image further emphasizes Rowse’s trademark accessory.

    Darren Rowse

April Bowles Olin used a different type of accessory when she needed photos for her blog, Blacksburg Belle. She simply brought a giant, red balloon to the photoshoot and instantly turned an ordinary pose into a memorable one.

    April Bowles Olin

So what’s your public image? Are you the brazenly done up guy, the woman with the powerful signature look, the smart guy with the nerdy glasses, or the fun-loving girl with the red balloon?

Hire a photographer to take your portrait (or shoot your own self-portrait), and carefully choose your clothing, your accessories, and your pose to form a distinct perception about yourself in people’s minds.

    2) Swing Your Slingshot

If you’re looking for a sure-fire way to get people talking about you, take a shot at a piece of popular wisdom or a widely held belief.

You’ll likely receive a furious reaction from some quarters, but there’s no such thing as bad publicity, right?

Of course, if you want to become famous and not infamous, you’ll want to attract supporters as well as detractors, so the trick to pulling this off is to take advantage of a phenomenon known as the “common enemy effect.”

Creating an us versus them scenario builds solidarity and brings your tribe closer to you. And guess what? They will come to your defense and become even more invested in you than they were prior to publicly taking your side.

An example of the common enemy effect in action is the aftermath of Seth Godin’s blog post, “The problem with non” (“non” being nonprofit organizations).

Did this article make a lot of people mad? You bet it did! Some bloggers even responded with their own posts about why Seth Godin is wrong. So it definitely succeeded in getting people to talk about him.

But did people say good things about him too? In fact, yes! While some people were enraged, others came to his defense, and even a popular blog for nonprofits took kindly to the exposé.

Derek Halpern used this principle quite deliberately in his post calling “Content is King” a myth. The post identified an enemy (people who say “Content is King”), and a tribe who would agree with his particular point of view (web designers). He then promoted the post to people on both sides of the debate: the people who say that content is king, and the web designers.

The result? The comments say it all. Halpern made some people mad, but he made others love him even more.

Who (or what) is the common enemy of your audience? Expose that enemy in a blog post, and tell everyone about it (yes, even the people who will be infuriated). Then, sit back and watch the debate ensue.

    3) Be a Flawed Superhero

“Even Superman has kryptonite.” Ever heard that before?

As psychologists have found, people have the strong tendency to like other people who they perceive to be similar to themselves. Well, no one is perfect, and everyone (even Superman) has a weakness. So if you want people to like you, you need to show your weaknesses.

Of course, someone who seems too flawed will struggle to be seen as credible, so you’ll need to walk a fine line between authority figure and just another regular guy or gal.

You have to become a superhero with a flaw.

A great example is Ash Ambirge of The Middle Finger Project. Ambirge is a bold blogger who’s snarky humor is more than a bit irreverent. She is popular, not because of any elegant prose, but because her uncensored writing style gives her a strong voice, paired with an uncanny ability to bond with her readers – even if that outspoken style leads her to say the wrong thing from time to time.

James Altucher’s “10 Confessions” was a hit post because a personal finance expert was admitting to being incredibly irresponsible. Altucher also lets the occasional swear word drop, and according to The Science of Swearing, such words actually play an important role in social bonding due to their cathartic effect.

The method I personally use to build trust and relatability with my readers is allowing mistakes to happen. So instead of limiting myself to topics that I am 100% confident about, I’ll stretch myself to learn as much as I can about difficult subjects and immediately share what I am learning… which inevitably leads to mistakes.

But if you do publish something that you later discover to be incorrect, don’t sweep it under the rug. Instead, bring the mistake to your reader’s attention before they catch it. This creates a “positive trust incident,” which will actually cause your readers to like and trust you more.

So what’s your kryptonite? Can you highlight that weakness in a blog post or in your writing style?

    4) Go Skinny Dipping… In a Fishbowl

OK, not literally. But being completely transparent is another way to show that you are a living, breathing human being, rather than just another cluster of pixels on your reader’s computer screen.

By giving proof that you actually “walk the walk,” transparency also serves to make you far more credible in your audience’s eyes.

Tim Ferriss became famous for performing experiments on himself and reporting his findings.

Pat Flynn became famous for his monthly income reports.

But how can you make transparency work for you? Well, you don’t need to earn six-figures each month, and you certainly don’t have to do anything crazy, like losing 30 lbs in 20 hours.

Just do your thing, and document it. Test a new theory. Learn a new skill. Publicly challenge yourself to accomplish a new goal, and let your audience hold you accountable. Keep a journal, and publish it as a weekly blog post series or an e-book.

Charlotte Hilton Andersen of The Great Fitness Experiment did exactly that: she challenged herself to try a new workout every month for one year, publicly chronicled her experience on her blog, and the finished memoir even became a published book.

Turn your blog into an online reality show. Your readers will eat it up, and they won’t be able to resist talking about it.

    5) Put Yourself in a Pigeonhole

If your readers were asked to describe you in just one sentence, what would they say?

If you don’t know – or you think they’d all say something different – that’s a major obstacle to memorability.

Why? Because word of mouth is a powerful force for spreading your message, and if people talk about you in a consistent way, they’ll reinforce – instead of dilute – each other.

Also, they’re more likely to talk about you, and say the right things, if you help them to know what to say.

So whether you’re crafting some text for your About page, writing an author bio for a guest post, or introducing yourself at the start of a podcast interview, make sure you have a consistent way to talk about yourself. The more different places where you are described in the same way, the more people will remember you for it (and come to believe it).

Danny Iny of Firepole Marketing became widely known as the “Freddy Krueger of blogging” because one reader called him that in a comment (“Wherever I turn, you’re there!”), so he just ran with it.

Iny’s nickname arose by accident, but many other bloggers have purposefully crafted their own personal tagline:

    • Nikki Elledge Brown is the “communication stylist.”
    • Tim Ferriss is the “human guinea pig.”
    • Erika Napoletano is the “ranting redhead.”
    • Natalie Sisson is the “suitcase entrepreneur.”
    • Srini Rao is the “unmistakable creative.”

Now it’s your turn: who do you want to be known as?

Shorter, snappier taglines are easier to remember, so describe your unique expertise (or your unique angle on your topic) in no more than two or three words.

Repeat those words over and over to imprint them on people’s minds, and ask everyone who features you to introduce you using your personal tagline.

    6) Ditch The Diplomacy

Are you sensitive to other’s feelings, avoiding conflict at all costs? Or do you speak your mind freely and pity those who disagree?

If it’s the former, you’re missing out on a big opportunity to stand out.

Researchers have found that people who use opinionated statements are more persuasive.

An opinionated statement doesn’t just express a point of view; it also expresses disapproval of alternative views.

For example, a non-opinionated statement would be, “I can’t abide that policy.”

Whereas, an opinionated statement would be, “No self-respecting person can abide that policy.”

This persuasive effect works by inducing dread of the social consequences of nonconformity – it’s the fear of disapproval from others.

Of course, it only works if the person making the statement is deemed credible. The more credibility you have prior to making an opinionated statement, the greater the effect.

A great example of an opinionated statement is when Derek Halpern wrote, “If you’re not building an email list, you’re an idiot.”

A less overt but still poignant example is Jeff Goins’ manifesto, “Writers Don’t Write to Get Published” where he makes the case that “real writers” don’t write for recognition, fame, or accolades… they write because they cannot not write (hence, anyone who writes for the wrong reasons is not a “real” writer).

Worried that making opinionated statements will make you sound like a jerk? Sure, some people will be miffed, but if it also causes them to take positive action, you’ve done your job.

In the earlier examples, the result was that people were persuaded to build an email list, or rekindle their love of writing. That’s a great thing!

What’s a fear-inducing, opinionated statement you can make to kick your readers’ rears into gear?

    7) Act Like a Fool

We know that humor helps to attract and hold people’s attention – that’s why it’s so commonly used in TV commercials.

But according to persuasion theory, humor may also have a persuasive effect. It puts the audience in a good mood (so that they are less likely to disagree with the message) and makes the person being humorous more likeable.

Irony can have an additional persuasive effect, one theory being that it distracts the brain from creating a counter-argument to an idea.

But did you also know that self-deprecating humor has a particularly persuasive effect when compared with other forms of humor?

    Why might this be?

Well, people who are speaking against their own self-interest (or who at least appear to be) gain a lot of credibility with their audience for doing so. Therefore, self-deprecating humor may work to persuade by increasing trust in the speaker or writer.

James Wedmore became a celebrity on YouTube using self-deprecating humor in his videos, including this video on how to make a video:

    James Wedmore

Jenny Lawson (a.k.a. “The Bloggess”) uses self-deprecating humor and ironic wisecracks in her blog posts, and she has become extremely popular for it.

So when you go to write your next blog post, poke some fun at yourself. Make a wisecrack or two. It will gain your reader’s trust, and they will be more open to believing what you want them to believe about you.

    8) Be a Creature of Habitat

The saying is, “Go big, or go home.” But what if you could go home to go big?

You see, sometimes everything you need to be big and memorable is right in your backyard.

Jeff Walker constantly associates his brand with his home state: Colorado. In most every photo or video, you can’t help but draw your breath at the expansive mountain view from the deck behind his home.

    Jeff Walker - Colorado
    Jeff Walker - Colorado

Aussie blogger Rachel MacDonald takes advantage of the rocky beaches of Australia to create a picturesque backdrop for her photos.

    Rachel Macdonald
    Rachel Macdonald

Ree Drummond (a.k.a. “The Pioneer Woman”) became famous by chronicling the everyday adventures on her country ranch. From rounding up cattle, to renovating the lodge, to what she cooked for dinner last night, everything that happens around her home is an opportunity to tell a story.

    Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman

Hilary Rushford’s natural habitat is New York. She sees every nook and cranny – every street corner, staircase, doorway or window pane – as a potential picture frame for her Instagram shots.

    Hilary Rushford
    Hilary Rushford

Where do you live? Don’t think that it has to be the exotic land of milk and honey. Simply use your own unique locale as the connecting theme in all your photos, videos, and in the stories you tell.

    9) Throw Yourself to the Lions

Ever wondered why televised debates are such big news during election season?

It’s because we love seeing candidates thrown into a situation they can’t completely control, where they’re forced to go “off script.”

And the perceived winners get a big credibility (and popularity) bump because we admire people who can think on their feet and stay cool under pressure.

Want the same benefit as a blogger? Take on your audience’s questions in real time.

Chris Ducker is getting a huge boost to his authority and his likeability by being one of the early adopters of a live video broadcasting app called Periscope. Ducker calls Periscope your personal “TV show in your pocket.”

Whenever he wants to broadcast, all he has to do is pull his phone out of his pocket, and all of his “#DuckerScope” followers receive a notification– right on their phones.

Viewers have the ability to comment as well, which creates incredible interactivity and allows viewers to get instant answers to their questions while Ducker demonstrates his expertise. It’s like public speaking on steroids.

Other ways of putting yourself on the spot include hosting a Google+ hangout, a webinar, or a Blab. Whatever platform you use, the key is to allow people to ask you questions in real time. (And for bonus points, put your face on camera.)

Let’s Pick Up Your Missing Puzzle Piece

Implementing a standout maneuver that catapults you out of online obscurity isn’t rocket science, but it does take guts.

You have to put yourself out there, stand up for what you believe in, and be unafraid to ruffle some feathers.

“Haters gonna hate,” but being a memorable blogger is so much bigger than you: it’s about persuading other people to take positive action in their lives.

You really can make a difference, even if you’re just a small potato right now. All you need is that missing puzzle piece to make the picture you’ve been working so hard to build come to life.

To start, pick just one of the strategies above and give it a try.

Go for broke and see how your audience reacts.

When they start talking, you’ll know you’re on the right track.

It’s time to stand up, and stand out.

  • Fluff is Thy Foe: 6 Insurance Landing Page Examples & Critiques

    Fluff-Featured
Fluff can seem harmless, but it’s a conversion killer. Image source.

Insurance is a complicated thing to market: it’s the only product that people will willingly pay for every month yet hope they never have to use. Of course, this is reasonable when you consider that it’s something used only during times of strife, injury or death.

So it’s no surprise that insurance companies find all sorts of ways to minimize the focus on those more unsavoury aspects of the deal, instead opting to push messages of security, reassurance and convenience — or they just skirt the subject altogether, focusing solely on discounts and savings.

But avoiding specifics rarely goes well, as you’re about to find out. Below, you’ll find my analysis of six insurance landing pages, along with critiques and lessons you can apply to your own campaigns within any industry.

    1. Amica Home Insurance: It’s not all about you

    autopilot

I’ll defer to copywriting expert Joanna Wiebe on the subject of using the word “we” in your landing page copy:

“We” is a bad, bad word in copywriting. You should reword every line of copy you have that begins with “we”. […] Because your visitors don’t want to hear about you. They want to hear about themselves – about their problems, about their needs, about their futures.”

The word we is used four times on this page. But even when that word isn’t being used, Amica seems to find it impossible to not talk solely about themselves:

Amica home insurance: Experience the Amica difference.
Extraordinary customer service that makes you feel right at home.

What does that mean? It does nothing to speak to the prospect’s needs. It does nothing to communicate how this service will improve the customer’s life. And it doesn’t make any effort to capture the reader’s attention nor compel them to continue reading.

If you want to talk about your extraordinary customer service, demonstrate it up front: be honest and transparent. In Amica’s case, they should consider communicating the real-world benefits of their service versus other providers, instead of dedicating so many words to saying so little.

    2. StateFarm: Remind me how I got here

    StateFarm

Can you guess what this page is about?

That it doesn’t explicitly mention insurance might seem unimportant. Surely the person who clicked the link to this page doesn’t need to be reminded what they came for, right?

But message match — how well the message of a landing page matches the message of its gateway, like an ad on Google or Facebook — is one of the pillars of creating an effective landing page. Essentially, the copy of an ad and the headline of its landing page should mirror each other. Why?

    • It’s a reminder. Admit it: you’ve opened new tabs in your web browser only to immediately forget why you had done so. That’s probably because your attention span is literally worse than that of a goldfish.

It’s not hard to imagine that someone could lose focus on what brought them to the page in the first place.

    • It’s a reassurance. Even if the user doesn’t forget what brought them there, they could think that you’ve brought them to the wrong place, or pulled a bait-and-switch. When ad copy and page headline match, they send a clear message: “This is exactly what you were looking for.”
    Message-Match
An example of strong message match, from Unbounce co-founder Oli Gardner’s 2013 post on the subject.

Since State Farm’s page would likely be displayed in results for searches for automobile insurance, it’s crazy that the only place those words are even mentioned is in this itty-bitty footer text.

    StateFarm-Footer
    Crystal clear!

    3. AIG Direct: Specificity is a good thing

    AIG Direct

So many of the insurance landing pages I came across in my research asked for extremely little information up front — often just a zip code to begin the quote process. So I was surprised when I saw this monster of a form from AIG Direct.

But I actually think this makes a lot of sense. While it’s true that the number of form fields tends to correlate negatively with conversion rates, this isn’t always the case. Introducing more friction up-front can help pre-qualify leads, and in the case of an insurance broker, having to provide that kind of information is almost reassuring.

If the length of the form alone is enough to make the prospect hesitate, AIG’s headline serves to make the task seem almost effortless:

It takes 2 minutes to request your term life quote.

While one could feel overwhelmed by the number of fields, this one line makes it clear that it’s not really that bad. Plus, two minutes is a pretty small investment when we’re talking about life insurance.

This page excels in some other areas, too. Rather than rely on fluff and wishy-washy philosophizing about the nature of life and family, AIG sets concrete expectations, thereby holding themselves accountable for meeting them.

    AIG-Direct-Trust

By solidifying their trustworthiness by linking to reviews and security certifications, and keeping the focus on the customer rather than themselves, AIG comes across as credible and transparent. And a real dollar amount, no matter what it is, is always preferable to nebulous “savings.”

    4. AAA Life Insurance: Make your form friendly

    AAA Life Insurance

I feel confident in saying that most people probably don’t enjoy shopping for life insurance very much. So it’s in your best interest to make the process of doing so seem as easy as possible.

This page from AAA makes this process seem so much worse than it (likely) actually is. And it all starts with the strange visual decisions made in the form’s design.

    AAA-Form

In web design, an affordance refers to a visual indicator of a digital object’s function. The most obvious example is adding bevels, borders, and background colors to links in order to make them resemble physical buttons. These details make it easier for the user to understand what these intangible objects actually do.

This form’s affordances are, frankly, all messed up. Not only are many of the form fields — text fields, in particular — nearly unnoticeable, but form labels and form fields are both contained within identical boxes, making the labels also look like fields.

Not only is this confusing, it has the unintended result of making the form appear twice as long as it actually is.

This, combined with the fact that most of the content on this page is dedicated towards explaining all of the subsequent “steps,” make this entire process seem extremely unapproachable.

Maybe they should’ve written that it only takes two minutes.

    5. Farmers Insurance: Show me the way

    StateFarm

This page from Farmers Insurance is likely to lead visitors in the wrong direction due to inaccurate visual cues and confusing copy. If you’re on this page to get a quote online, where would you think to click?

Would it be, perhaps, this big button-looking-square that says Get a Quote Online on it?

    Get-a-Quote

You’re likely already aware that this isn’t the case: the actual call to action is the green Click & Save Today! button. But I actually completely missed it at first.

    FastQuote

    Why?

    • It’s framed identically to the stock photo next to it, which I glossed over
    • It’s also shares a colour palette with the photo, making it blend into the page
    • The family is both walking and moving away from the call to action, rather than directing attention towards it
    • The copy — both “Get a FastQuote®” and “Click & Save Today” — were both less related to what I was looking for than “Get a Quote Online”

While there’s lots of talk in the conversion optimization world of color psychology and which colors correlate with which emotions, all of this is secondary to the most basic notion of CTA design: make it contrast with the rest of the page. (Psst — learn more about driving conversions through design in our new Attention-Driven Design ebook!)

And with regards to the button copy, it needs to indicate action and also speak directly to the user’s desire. For a smart formula, I’ll quote this oft-repeated advice from Joanna Wiebe:

Write button / CTA copy that completes this phrase: I want to ________________.

    6. Health Insurance Sort: Cheap photos cheapen your page

    StateFarm

Insurance is a pretty serious thing, let alone insurance that would, in a time of crisis, allow me to remain alive. So I would expect anyone selling it to me to take it equally as seriously as I do.

But everything about this page screams, “we’re not credible.” And while the copy isn’t great, the most glaring issues relate to its design.

Stock photos such as the ones shown above are often used to add “visual interest” to a page. This, despite the fact that usability testing shows that while photos of people are effective at capturing attention, they subconsciously gloss over images that resemble stock photos.

Many of the examples in this post are clearly using stock imagery, but this page is exceptional. Each photo has a completely different lighting and style, and the hero image is so obviously a poor composite of two different images that I can’t believe anyone would ever enter their zip code into that misaligned text box.

    Health-Insurance-Sort-Stock-Photo
Now we can recklessly grapple in the middle of this lovely autumn road, knowing any injuries will be fully covered! Thanks, Health Insurance Sort!

    Fluff is thy foe

When crafting landing pages, “fluff” is thy foe. Whether it be pointless stock images that desperately try to jazz things up, or copy that talks its way around the real benefits and value of your offering, attempts at obfuscation via feel-goodery are as exactly as transparent to customers as they are to us.

And landing pages aren’t mere repositories for information; they’re designed to be a response to a specific need or expressed intent. If someone comes to your page and finds it confusing or deceitful, you can kiss that conversion goodbye.

  • How Personality Affects Website Preferences

We know that different personalities prefer different images and messages in ads. Personalizing ads based on personality can yield a high return on your marketing investment.

On a larger scale, different personalities also prefer different websites. Let’s take a look at a study of Internet users’ personality traits to discover how personality affects which websites people find appealing and visit frequently.

    The study

In 2012, Dr. Michal Kosinski and Dr. David Stillwell from the University of Cambridge and Pushmeet Kohli, Yoram Bachrach and Thore Graepel from Microsoft Research released results of a study of more than 160,000 Internet users’ personality traits. The study examined how users’ personalities affect their online behavior.

The researchers measured personality via myPersonality, a Facebook application that offers its users personality assessments and feedback on their scores.

Once users completed the personality assessment, they had the chance to opt in or out of releasing access to their “liked” information as part of the myPersonality app. This allowed researchers to measure preferences for websites in two ways. First, they asked 10,897 participants to report on which relatively popular websites they visit by filling out the WPQ (Website Preference Questionnaire). Secondly, they were granted access to the specific pages that participants “liked” on Facebook.

By combining the results of the personality assessments with visitors’ favorite websites, researchers were able to draw personality profiles of websites’ audiences.

    Results

Let’s look at the website deviantart.com as an example. The audience of the deviantArt online community website consists of alternative art enthusiasts and artists.

The researchers found that deviantart.com attracts an audience that tends to be liberal and artistic rather than conservative and traditional (i.e., high Openness), spontaneous and flexible rather than well organized (i.e., low Conscientiousness), shy and reserved rather than outgoing and active (i.e., with Extraversion) and emotional rather than calm and relaxed (i.e. high Neuroticism).

The findings were consistent between the Facebook “likes” and self-reported website use.

OCEAN stands for the Big Five personality traits — Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism.

Overall the researchers found that people high on Extraversion frequent websites related to music and Internet (the category that contains Facebook and Twitter), while Introverts prefer websites related to comics, literature and movies.

People high on Openness (the most liberal, creative audience who are open to new experiences) were especially attracted to:

    (1) modcloth.com — a indie, retro and vintage clothing website

    (2) boingboing.net — a blog on media, technology and popular culture

    (3) astrology-online.com and cafeastrology.com — astrology websites

    (4) gutenberg.org — a free e-book repository

    (5) failblog.com — a website with humorous media content

    (6) fineartamerica.com — a fine arts website

    (7) 911tabs.com — a website specializing in guitar tabs

    (8) senate.gov — the website for the United States senate

On the other hand, people low on Openness (more conservative and “conventional”) liked:

    (1) dealspl.us and newegg.com — shopping deal websites

    (2) a variety of health, fitness, recipe and style websites such as fda.gov, mydailymoment.com and fitnessmagazine.com

    (3) doctorslounge.com — a website specializing in health and medical jobs

    (4) gateway.com — a website that sells information technology products

    (5) nhl.com — the website of the National Ice Hockey League in the United States

    (6) pier1.com — ecommerce site that sells furniture and accessories

    Takeaways

Personality affects preferences for websites and online behavior. Marketers can benefit from knowing what kind of personalities their websites are attracting and personalize content or services, product recommendations, search results and suggested websites based on this information.

  • 70% of SEO Is Easy. Here’s What One SEO Pro Swears You Should Do to Master It.

I’m going to make a couple of assumptions here.

I’m going to assume that your business is reasonably healthy.

I’m also going to assume that you don’t have much by the way of spare time within your working day.

If I’m right about both of these, then here’s a problem you’re bound to have:

You can and will always find plenty of reasons to leave search engine optimization (SEO) on your to-do list for perpetuity.

After all, SEO is technical, complicated, time-consuming and potentially dangerous. The SEO industry is full of self-proclaimed gurus whose lack of knowledge can be deadly. Not me of course. I’m different.

And if that wasn’t enough, there’s the terrifying fact that even if you dabble in SEO in the most gentle and innocent way, you might end up in a worse state than you were to begin with.

To make matters worse, Google keep changing the rules on an ongoing basis. There have been a bewildering number of major updates, which despite their cuddly names have had a horrific impact on website owners worldwide.

So SEO is technical and complicated, potentially disastrous, changes on an ongoing basis, and you don’t even have time to properly read this article.

So why should you care enough about SEO to do it anyway?

The main reason is that you probably already see around 30-60% of your website traffic come from the search engines. That might make you think that you don’t need to bother, because you’re already doing so well. But you’re almost certainly wrong.

If you have a look through the keyword data in your Google Webmaster Tools account (more of that later), you’ll probably see that around 30-50% of the keywords used to find your website are brand names – the names of your products or companies. These are searches carried out by people who already know about you. But the people who don’t know who you are but are searching for what you sell aren’t finding you right now.

Webinar Dave CollinsThis is your opportunity.

If a person goes looking for a company or product by name, Google will steer them towards what they’re looking for. Their intelligence does have limits, however, and even though they know your name they won’t be completely clear about what you sell. That’s where SEO would come in.

Still need more convincing? How about the fact that the seeming complexities of SEO mean that your competition are almost certainly neglecting it too. They have the same reservations as you about complexity, time and danger – and hopefully aren’t reading this article, and so are none the wiser to the well-kept secret: That 70% of SEO is easy.

So I’m going to lead you through what you need to do to tap into that stream of people looking for what you sell right now. Are you ready?

    What is Real SEO?

Real SEO is all about helping Google understand the content of your website. It’s about steering, guiding and assisting Google. Not manipulating them.

It’s easy to assume that they already understand the content and relevance of each and every page on your website, but the fact is that they need a fair amount of hand-holding. Fortunately, helping them along really isn’t very difficult at all.

Oh and in case you’re wondering, Real SEO has nothing to do with keyword stuffing, keyword density, hacks, tricks or cunning techniques. If you hear any of these terms from your SEO advisor, run away from them as quickly as you can. And don’t look back.

    Understanding your current situation
    with Google Analytics

Before you can do anything to improve your SEO status, you need to get an idea of how you’re already doing. In other words how much organic traffic you’re getting, how much you rely on it, and how the situation may have changed over the past year or so.

Here is a very quick and easy way of doing so.

    Step 1:

Open up your Google Analytics account.

    Analytics overview

    Step 2:

Click on the date range selector on the top right of the interface, and change the year of the first date to last year. So 12 Dec 2014 will become 12 Dec 2013. Then click on apply.

Analytics dates - change to 13 months

    Step 3:

Click on the All Sessions rectangle towards the top left, click once on Organic Traffic and click Apply.

    Organic Segment in Google Analytics

    Step 4:

Click the little black-and-white squares icon that has now appeared under the date selector on the top right, and drag the slider all the way over to Higher Precision.

    Analytics - number of sessions

    Step 5:

Change the interval buttons on the top right of the graph to Week to make this easier to digest.

    Analytics - week view

At this point your graph should look something like this:

SEO traffic - trend over 13 months

It’s worth noting the approximate proportion of your visitors that presently come from organic sources.

    Step 6:

Click the little downward arrow to the right of the All Sessions rectangle and choose remove, so that we’re only looking at the organic traffic on its own.

    Remove All Sessions

    Step 7:

Click on Select a metric next to the Sessions button above the graph and select Pages / Session.

    Select a metric

You should now be looking at something like this:

SEO traffic - quantity and quality

In the example above, we can see that the quantity of traffic has been increasing since the middle of August, but the quality of the traffic (as measured by the number of pages per session) has fallen significantly.

How you choose to view this is down to your own graph, recent history and interpretation of events, but this should give you an indication of how things stand at the present time.

And as in most things analytical, trends are often more revealing than a snapshot of a brief moment in time.

    Your Google Webmaster Tools data

If you’re not overly familiar with your Google Webmaster Tools account, it’s really worth taking 10-15 minutes to see what’s on offer.

    I can’t recommend this enough.

I know you’re busy, but you’ll want to thank me for this.

Once you’re in your account, I’d recommend that you look into the:

    HTML Improvements

This shows you the issues that Google think might improve your SEO performance. Read that again and decide if you want to pay attention or not.

    Google Webmaster Tools HTML Improvements

    Crawl Errors

This shows you issues that Google have found on your website, mainly in terms of broken links and missing pages.

    Google Webmaster Tools Crawl Errors

    Search Queries

This is a biggie! It shows you the search terms used in Google that cause your website to be listed. Not only that, but it also shows the keywords that may result in your website being listed but not clicked on.

    Google Webmaster Tools Search Queries

From what you see here and the trends shown in your Analytics data, you should now have a good idea of your current status:

    • How much organic traffic you get from the search engines
    • How dependent your website may be on this source
    • Which keywords are sending you the most clicks
    • Which keywords produce impressions but no clicks (SEO opportunities in other words)
    • Which pages on your website are broken and need fixing

If you want to explore further – which you’ll surely want to do, the more you get into this – I recommend Screaming Frog as a good diagnostics tool, or Botify if your website is large or unusually complex.

Combining the data into something useful

Your Google Analytics session will have shown you how you’re doing from an SEO point of view in terms of the quantity and to some extent the quality of your visitors.

But it’s only showing you what is already working. In other words: the people that are finding you on the search engines, and clicking on your links.

The Google Webmaster Tools Search Query data, on the other hand, will give you a better idea of what isn’t working.

It will show you the keyword searches that you are getting listed in the results for, but not necessarily getting clicked on.

And it doesn’t take much by the way of expertise to see why.

If, for example, you see that “your targeted keyword” that you feel is extremely relevant has generated over 2,000 impressions in the last month, but produced only 2 clicks, you’ll probably find a very low average position. Bear in mind that an average position of 14 will mean being around half way down the second page of results. Think about how rarely you go beyond the first two or three listings, never mind to the second page of results, and you’ll understand why the CTR is so low.

So now you have an idea for what you’re being found for at the present time. But what about the other terms?

What would you like to be found for?

This is one of the more common SEO mistakes, on a number of different levels.

Many businesses assume that they don’t need to worry about keyword research. They think they know what terms people use to find what they sell, and they also assume that Google understand the content on their website. This is incorrect on all counts.

A better starting point is to brainstorm a small number of your most obvious keywords, then run them through Google’s Keyword Planner. Ignore the information in the Ad group ideas tab, and instead go straight to the Keyword ideas tab. Rather than wade through the very unfriendly interface, I recommend downloading the data into Excel, where not only is more detail included, but you can also slice, dice, sort and report the data as required.

From there you can delete all the irrelevant columns and start working your way through the list, deleting any irrelevant keywords as you go along.

It’s around this stage that you may hit a problem in terms of where to focus your efforts. The number of reported searches for a given keyword is of course important, but so is the level of competition. Ideally you’d like keywords with plenty of searches but not too much competition.

Solution: I personally like to factor both number of searches and competition together by adding a column that simply divides the number of searches squared by the level of competition.

(number of searches x number of searches / competition)

There are plenty of alternatives to this basic formula, but I like it for ease of use and simplicity.

Once I’ve added this column, I then sort the data by this value (largest to smallest) and I then only usually need 10-15 keywords at most to give me plenty of ideas to work with.

This is a slightly involved but effective methodology for keyword research, as what you’re left with is a list of keywords that both Google and you consider to be relevant to the content of your website. And relevance is an important concept in SEO.

So Real SEO keyword research is about making sure that your customers, website and Google are all in agreement and alignment over the content of your website. Other sources of inspiration and ideas include having a look at what terms your competition are targeting, Google Trends, and of course Google Suggest. If you’re not sure where to find these things, you can probably work out where to go to search for them!

If you want to dive further into understanding your current search engine status, go and search for some of the better keywords that you just discovered and see where you rank compared to your competition. Note that it’s vital to avoid Google serving up personalised results, so either use the privacy, incognito or anonymous mode of your browser for the searches, or use a browser that you don’t normally use. I hope this is Internet Explorer. If what you find isn’t great, don’t despair: everything in SEO is fixable. (Terms and conditions may apply).

    Putting it all together

Assuming you’ve read this far and have been following my directions, you should now have:

    1. A good idea of where things stand with your current search engine traffic, and
    2. A solid list of keywords that you’re not getting visitors for but very much want.

All that’s left now is to work out how to use these keywords.

But before we do so, let’s take a quick step back.

If you’ve in any way kept up with what’s been happening in SEO over the last couple of years, you’ll have probably heard about Google updates with names like Panda, Hummingbird, Phantom, Pirate and more.

I won’t go into the technical details of what Google are doing, but it is important to understand why they’re trying to do so. At the most basic level, Google understand that there’s a very real problem with people who are trying manipulate their index. In response to this, they’re trying to clean up their results. They don’t want people getting fed up with bad results and considering other options. (Have you even tried Bing?)

This is extremely important. Remember earlier when I said that 70% of SEO was easy? That rule still applies. So if, for example, you have a list of keywords that you know are relevant to what you sell, then all you need to do is create great content for them. Incredibly, that’s all there is to it. (Terms and conditions apply again unfortunately – see below.)

There is, however, one simple rule to be consistently followed without exception: that the content you create should not only be good quality and 100% original, but should also be written primarily for the human visitor and not the search engine spider.

In other words, if you are creating some fantastic content for a keyword like “choosing a small business HR service”, then the article should not only make perfect sense if read out loud (as opposed to the same phrase being repeated 15+ times), but should provide real value to the person reading it.

    So the process is simple:

    1. Choose your keywords
    2. Create spectacular content

Wait, is it really that simple?
So I’m an SEO guru now?

Unfortunately there’s a lot more to the other 30% of SEO than just creating great content and waiting for the visitors. There are issues like helping Google understand the content on your pages and website, incoming links, page authority, domain authority, usage patterns, spam factors, canonical issues and much more. The SEO in me is tempted to yabber on about more pseudo-science, but I won’t.

But again there’s the often overlooked fact about Google: they actually do a reasonable job of working out what’s on your website and (to some extent) understanding the gist of it. If you’ve never done any SEO on your website but still get some traffic from Google, this is why.

But even without dabbling in the other 30% of SEO, by creating the right content for the right visitors using the precise language and terminology that your potential customers are using, you’re significantly better off than your competition.

And you can only gain from this.

When you’ve checked this off your to do list and made it an ingrained part of your content creation process, then you’re ready to delve into the other 30% of the SEO. The not-so-easy side. The dark side.

Until then, work on understanding your current situation, exploring the opportunities, creating a list of good keywords, creating the right content for them, and starting 2015 with a little bit of smart, safe and real SEO.
